Boyfriend jeans

by on May.19, 2009, under Headlines

Hi Y’all,

Tuesday has a very rainy look to it this week, but no problems, freshens up the air. And fresh is never bad, heh. You can’t be too fresh…

Haha, OK enough of that. Few words on a “new” trend of the Spring/Summer 09,trumpets trrrrrrrr, the boyfriend jeans.

Ladies been rocking real skinny jeans for the past year or two and that’s cool and you can even see those legging/jeans mixtures here and there. But this season major brands are bringing in baggier and roomy look often mixed up with the other word of the day, the distressed look.

Levi’s was I suppose the most recent brand to bring out the boyfriend jeans line. This particular style was trendy in HK/Taiwan axle last year, but many particular trends often land in the Western world with a slight delay.

I don’t think it’s a half bad look for the ladies. I mean a nice pair of jeans and a nice top, no issues with that. I guess this might be some form of a follow up to the “girlfriend-jeans”-look guys been rocking recently. I mean it was trendy in Japan like a year ago to dress in your girlfriends jeans and clothes and fitting her clothes actually got you some street credibility. Guys worked real hard to look skinny and some confessed to enjoy having their girlfriends as the dominant party in the relationship.

Kaori Shoji wrote in her article in International Herald Tribune on Monday, November 19, 2007, that in Japan it is the guys who want to be skinny and cute. And I quote: “Twenty-five-year-old Junichi Shirakawa, who works at the denim boutique 45 RPM, said that his goal is to get his weight down from 57 to 55 kilograms, although his height is 182 centimeters. Being really skinny is essential, not just for fashion and work purposes but also because girls seem to go for thin guys, he said.”

In the same article Nigo, the director of Japanese brand A Bathing Ape was quoted saying that, “designer clothes look best on men whose bodies don’t do the talking, that are silent, slim, practically invisible. Because the clothes should do all the talking, right.” I guess he has some point there.

Styles are personal and all but I did have a slight grin when I came across a particular group on Facebook titled: People’s Movement For The Revolution Against Skinny Jeans. It made me smile.

Slim fitting jeans are cool, I mean slim yet comfortable look. I’m a big dude and slim fitting jeans would just not look cool on me, I would probably look like a scarecrow on steroids, aaah not sure about that reference, but will leave it there, haha. I suppose you can catch the drift.

It’s fascinating to see how guys work to bring out their feminine side and girls feel confident to once again dress in “comfortable” outfits and still remain sexy. I guess this is all about mixing up the traditional roles, heh. Each their own, but do note that I am trying to remain political here.

That being said I leave you with the following words, keep rocking your jeans in style, it is the wearer that brings out the true nature of the fabric, no matter how close to your skin you wear it. No doubt. But hey, I would be glad to hear from the guys and gals in the audience, what do you think about bf- and gf-jeans?

Be easy and be hearing from Y’all. Peace…
