Raw or Sanforized Denim?

It’s Friday Y’all…
One of the better days of the week. Next stop, Saturday…
I know that I posted something on the shrinking and fading of the jeans before but recently we’ve received several questions on the denim sizing. Thus to keep y’all as informed as possible, here’s another bid on denim sizing and shrinkage.
Finding a good fit might be somewhat of a progress and there are few things to think about before getting a pair of jeans. Sanforized or raw denim? Which fit not to mention brand. To find the best possible fit it’s good to measure your current jeans and then compare the sizing to the size charts available. At this point it’s also good to note that the raw denim jeans are slightly bigger but will also shrink much more after each soaking due to the shrink to fit nature of the fabric. The raw denim usually shrinks much more than a sanforized/pre-shrunk pair of jeans.
Both types will shrink little bit after each wash and gradually stretch back again, but the difference is mainly in the amount of shrinkage. But this is something to think about when getting a pair, if the sizing of the raw jeans seems to have a great fit in comparison to your current jeans it is worth noticing that the the waist will be reduced approximately 2 inches (5 cm) and the length will be shrunk 2 to 3 inches (5-7,5 cm) depending on the brand of denim. True Religion jeans for instance have been pre-shrunk and shrink much less than a pair of raw TYOs or Katos. Also the washing/drying temperatures will affect the shrinking. To achieve minimum shrinkage, it’s good to wash the jeans in cool water (below 30 degrees celsius). Also avoid tumble dryer, rather hang dry the jeans.
Below chart further illustrates the difference between raw denim and sanforized pair of jeans. Momotaro Vintage Label 0201 is used as an example in this case.
You can also check our measurement guide and available size charts for further information on how to find a good fit.
Everyone have their preferences when it comes to jeans (naturally). Some might prefer to have a very close fit and they prefer to get their raw jeans in just the right size (raw denim or pre-shrunk) and let the jeans gradually stretch to the right fit by wearing them on regular basis (maybe 3 to 5 days a week). However more often than not, if you have a pair of raw denim with a close fit, you should be careful with the washes, i know folks that don’t really wash their jeans too often just to make sure their jeans don’t shrink as they would no longer fit right, heh.
My contact from Japan mentioned that it would seem that the folks in Europe really like the raw-form jeans. You can also hit us up and tell us which you prefer? Do you like to get your jeans in raw-natural form or do you prefer sanforized denim which will not shrink all that much after soakings?
That’s all for now. Will get back at y’all shortly and until then, have an prosperous day.
