World Cup Edition – Part 2 – The Art of Travel by Louis Vuitton

by on Jul.12, 2010, under Headlines

Greetings!

You know, I’m gonna push back my weekly Copper Label project update in celebration of the just finished FIFA World Cup. It all came down to Spain beating Netherlands in the final. Not the most exciting match but it was all good. I guess I join those who say that Spain deserved it. Vamos!

We are all familiar with the coveted FIFA World Cup trophy, but what about story behind the trophy? The younger generations have all grown up seeing the most recent piece of artistry but there was a different trophy all the way until the 70′s when the original trophy was given to Brazil following their three World Cup victories. However the trophy was stolen not once but twice and after the second heist it’s still missing in action.

In 1974 FIFA commissioned design and production of a new World Cup trophy and according to good old Wikipedia, “Fifty-three submissions were received from sculptors in seven countries. Italian artist Silvio Gazzaniga was awarded the commission. The trophy stands 36.5 centimetres (14.4 inches) tall and is made of 5 kg (11 lb) of 18 carat (75%) gold with a base (13 centimetres [5.1 inches] in diameter) containing two layers of malachite”. (Wikipedia)  Thus the trophy we are all familiar with was born. Interesting enough, I always thought the trophy would be solid, but apparently it is not as it would be way too heavy. Like 70-80 kg heavy.

I have to say the World Cup trophy is probably my favorite trophy of all. It’s just like a piece of art crafted by a true artisan. We love artisan products and one brand that has stayed true to the artisan mentality is Louis Vuitton. LV was well presented during the World Cup with their Art of Travel campaign that featured stories from football legends such as Pele, Diego Maradona and Zinedine Zidane. Louis Vuitton also had the honor of producing the official carrying case for the trophy. I really like the way the below picture represents what the brand is all about without losing any focus on the actual trophy. Awesome.

People can say what they want about the brand but they have retained their image and their products have lasted the test of time without sacrificing the brand’s values. Simple but eye catching designs not tied to seasonal waves. There is a lot of similarity between the brand and the brands we have a privilege working with. Although not high fashion, brands not sacrificing their values in order to meet wavy fads and trends.

It’s all about consistency. Stay true to what you believe in and what makes your product yours and it could be that it’s your signature pattern that covers the case carrying the World Cup trophy.

It’s all about the journey as I so often boast and LV has realized this representing the brand as a part of that journey. The association is easy to form being that we’re talking about a luggage brand. I seriously need to stop checking the photos, with an anniversary coming closer the gift ideas are all directing my mind to the LV store.

“She said life is a journey, I need mine just like my attorney”… I’m off to listen some Aston Martin music and get some work done. Stay safe everyone and enjoy the journey no matter where it takes you. I’m out, peace.
