Marvel meets the NBA

by on Oct.30, 2010, under Comics, Design and Artwork, Headlines, Sports

We saw the new Tron variants by Marvel. Artwork that had many comic book purists cringing their teeth in agony. Although some of the titles were on point and pretty damn cool the whole buzz about the titles was more focused on a fear of Disney influence on Marvel. Disney did indeed acquire ownership on this comic book giant and although an idea of Donald Duck meeting Spider-Man even gets me cringing my teeth, I don’t really think this is going to hurt Marvel. Moreover I recently came across a good reason why this new partnership might actually work. You see, Disney also owns ESPN, the beloved sports central. So what’s the catch? How about NBA meeting Marvel in with original Marvel artwork on every team in the NBA?

Looking pretty damn good. A special shout out to Mikko for sending a link to this awesomeness. I mean this is something comic book fans and basketball fans especially should and most likely do appreciate. This one also kicks the Tron variants’ ass, seriously.

The NBA is pretty much all about real life superheroes clashing on a basketball court so Marvel fits right into the theme. Just to quote the original article, “Suave, intelligent, able to defeat enemies with the help of his flying Iron Man suit, Tony Stark is the man everyone wants to be-and beat. Same goes for Kobe Bryant, holder of five NBA titles. His idea of world peace? Title No. 6, matching Michael Jordan’s twin three-peat accomplishments.” The artwork and mash-ups are just that cool.

Other great examples include the title Unamazing Cavaliers with LeBron James walking away, ditching his Cavs jersey for the Miami Heat. Images like this just work well with that classic Marvel style.

It would be awesome to get a hard copy of the pieces preferably in a comic book format. I think these have been published in a magazine but printing these in a proper comic book would be the way to go. So do you prefer the Tron variants or the ESPN Marvel mash-up? I like both, but this one a lot more.
