Skateistan

by on Nov.09, 2010, under Headlines, Sports

As we’re getting our “first snow” in Finland a lot of people start to complain about the weather and the lack of outside activities caused by the climate. Personally I appreciate the seasonal changes. The only thing I hope is that the winter waits for another week as my winter tires are in my hometown and I do not want to drive there on slicks in this weather. But while folks continue to complain about small things it’s healthy to look at the big picture and appreciate the things around us. Roof on your head, food on your table, not to mention broadband connection, game consoles and smart-phones. Although we all know people in some places on earth do not enjoy life like ours, some things till unify the youth and give them hope. Things like skateboarding for instance.

Our friend Tim posted an awesome link on the Soap Box and in case you missed it, you can check it here. I think it’s totally blogworthy stuff. Skateistan: to live and skate Kabul, a video by Orlando Von Einsiedel “is a beautifully shot film that follows the lives of a group of young skateboarders in Afghanistan. Operating against the backdrop of war and bleak prospects, the Skateistan charity project is the world’s first co-educational skateboarding school, where a team of international volunteers work with girls and boys between the ages of 5 and 17, an age group largely untouched by other aid programmes.” (Diesel New Voices)

You check out the video below. It’s tragic and sad but inspiring at the same time.
