Tradition is important. With any culture there are those objects and aspects of tradition that carry on from one generation to another even without us paying any attention to these things. One of these traditional objects in the Japanese culture is the Daruma Doll. The Japanese “lucky charm” with a funny face has gotten a reboot by none other than BAPE.

According to the all-knowing Wikipedia, “The Daruma doll, also known as a Dharma doll, is a hollow, round, Japanese doll modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism. These dolls, though typically red and depicting a bearded man (Dharma), vary greatly in color and design depending on region and artist. Though considered an omocha, meaning toy, Daruma has a design that is rich in symbolism and is regarded more as a talisman of good luck to the Japanese.”

BAPE has brought their signature camouflage and combined this with the traditional Daruma doll motif. Call it a toy or a lucky charm, this design will be “exclusive to the Bape Maebashi location the dolls will be on sale starting January 2, with two additional colourways to be released in the upcoming weeks.” (Hypebeast)
