Watch pocket, coin pocket, fob pocket. Originally designed for pocket watches, hence the name, today it is used almost exclusively for just about any other item than a pocket watch.

There are deep, shallow, low rise, high rise, wide, narrow, tiny, huge, uncomfortable and unnoticeable watch pockets. Yet all these are just scratching the surface, as the different styles are as varied as the brands that make the jeans.

A few universal pointers to bear in mind if you’re using your watch pocket: The higher the inlet, the more difficult it is to access, especially if you’re wearing a broad belt. The deeper the pocket and the more stuff, say, a mobile phone, is shoved in, the bulkier and less enjoyable using the pocket gets. Vice versa, if the watch pocket is just big enough for the tips of two fingers, all usefulness is gone. As it is with all things, so it is with watch pocket size and cut – moderation. As the differences are so great, so are the uses. This is an unofficial Momotaro Going to Battle label project update presenting just what can fit into this specific watch/coin/fob pocket.

Now, the smallest items are easily carried in the watch pocket. Spare change, my trusted Zippo lighter, guitar picks, tokens (if anyone can be bothered), keys, condoms, scraps of paper with phone numbers on them, pot (not that we endorse using – unless you’re selling) and condoms (these are important). What about the bigger items then? Have a look below to see how an iPod Nano, a credit card, and the go-to tool of all men about town and other places, the Swiss Army knife, fit into the watch pocket of Momotaro’s Going to Battle labels.

Ryan Reynold’s a busy man. Not only is he still confirmed as 2012′s Deadpool in his own spin-off for Marvel, he’ll be lighting up the sky in 2011′s Green Lantern for DC comics.

This particular reincarantion of the Lantern, Hal Jordan, is a cocky test pilot who, by coincidende/chance/destiny receives a ring that enables him to harness the power of his imagination to protect the universe against an outside evil, Parallax (try saying that sentence with a serious face and not giggling – it’s hard).

The film also stars Blake Lively as the love interest, Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond (a name undoubtedly given because a man with that kinda moustache cannot but have that kinda name) and Mark Strong as the sinister Sinestro, with a special appearance by Tim Robbins. The film’s directed by Martin Campbell, the man responsible for the James Bond revamp in the form of Casino Royale.

The first news out were these character posters released during Comic-Con. All major players present? Check. Hints of the bad guy? Check. The Lantern’s oath used as a device to explain what the Green Lantern (Corps) is all about before viewers even see the trailer? Check.

Images courtesy of Empire.

In addition, although there’s no actual footage, have a look at the panel discussion clips from this year’s Comic-Con. A lot of the normal hype-building, but Reynolds reciting the Lantern’s oath to a little kid – that’s how hearts are won. The guy’s a bona fide movie star.

Arriving to theatres near you in 2011, Sucker Punch is Zack Snyder’s latest feature, after the quotable 300 and the awful Watchmen. The “plot” for this visual thrill ride takes place mostly in the imagination of Baby Doll, a young lady whose evil stepfather has her committed to a mental asylum. Somehow, there always seems to be an evil stepfather. Nonetheless, it still functions as a perfect excuse for Znyder to throw in his most stunning visuals yet. After all, a film in a Fallout-esque-steam-punk-genre-bending-setting combining World War II, zombies, ninjas, insane looking mecha-droids, samurais and dragons cannot be bad.

Time for an update on the Going to Battle label project I’ve been working on.

This was what my Momotaro Going to Battle labels looked like six months in. Now, two months and three washes later.

It is noteworthy to mention that a boat was captained while wearing these. Initially the jeans got soaked from the spray and the rain, but after the storm eased up they dried quickly in the wind and when dry (much to my liking), became rather wind proof. The skiff was pushed for all its clattering 35 horsepower Evinrud was worth, and still nothing permeated the protective layer of hardcore Japanese denim. Momotaro 1, The Elements 0.

These Momotaros have experienced no noticeable extra shrinkage after the initial washes. My Going to Battle labels were also dipped into the Baltic Sea nearby and given a little rub with sand after which they were left to dry out in the sun. The irregular blotches and lines at the front and back of the knees is from said sanding. The stacking abrasions at the hem have grown lighter. I discovered that the more the denim is washed the higher the contrast between the unbroken, unscathed indigo and the worn parts becomes. The jeans adduce more wear than tear, with only a slight rip at the hemline from cuffing.

The traditional Japanese white lines and the leather patch have all evolved quite nicely. The patch, supple to begin with, is now completely unnoticeable from the rest of the jeans. Which is a good thing, as I have a tendency to rip out patches that are too big, heavy or studded. Because why would you not want to be comfortable in your jeans?

Last time I wrote about my Going to Battle labels I mentioned a wish to have worn them rougher. I now echo that desire. The jeans have more character and look far better than two months ago, but the fading is still too slow for my taste. I think these need to experience the concrete concrete kiss. Road rash here we come.

Momotaro Going to Battle labels after eight months and five detergent washes:

The 2008 Hammarhead Triumph T100 Scrambler designated ‘Jack Pine’ is customised by Hammarhead Industries. The company’s mission, as laid out by founder James Hammarhead, is to build “simple yet modern motorcycles”. Judging by the Jack Pine, they’ve succeeded spectacularly. With the going price of $16, 500 it’s not even an impossibility. Just impossibly good looking.

Next up is the Audi R8 V10 ‘Valkyrie’ is compiled by SR Auto Group, who do not do their own builds but use other manufacturers’ parts. Even so, they more than make up in impeccable taste. By far the meanest looking Audi there is handles just as viciously as it looks. If they ever make a fourth Transporter film (and please, make it better than the third – which should be easy) this should be the car driven by Frank Martin.

Lastly, the ICON CJ3B Willy Jeep replica works particularly well now that the summer heat is on. Stack in your surfboards, kite surfing equipment, beach volleyballs and pull on your flip flops. This is the perfect summer car.

It is time for a farewell.

It was a good run, but even all Great Things must eventually come to an end. The Old Spice Guy and his videos that led the internet community on a merry trip into the land of Awesome Viral Advertising has now come to a close. It was a glorious time. A time to be remembered and cherished. A time to reminisce when our joints are creaking and we’re called ancient rather than old. It was the magical time of the Old Spice Guy. Far better this choice too than milk it for all it’s worth.

Let’s hear it for the Old Spice Guy:

HIP HIP HOORAY! HIP HIP HOORAY! HIP HIP HOORAY!

Then to the news.

If you haven’t already, check out Batman’s Twitter account. The Caped Crusader seems to have nary a problem fighting crime and commenting on social issues.

To get slightly closer to being a rough-voiced, kidnapped, alien killing hard-ass… does not seem likely, but if you could, you could start by acquiring this sweet Hamilton Below Zero “Predator Black” watch. It’s the very same Adrien Brody wore in Predators.

Lastly – Machete. Machete! Seems like its trying to compete against The Expendables by hiring Steven Seagal and Don Johnson (and Jessica Alba who makes all movies she’s in 42,5 % prettier, but 23,7 % suckier). Nonetheless, it seems like the stuff Rodriguez does best, and I for one will most definitely be at the cinemas drooling over Jessica. Erm. Enjoying the film? Too late, huh?

If you’re interested in where Rodriguez originally came from and who he was working with, let me introduce From Dusk Till Dawn. Since its conception it has been a cult fan favourite. It also seems to be even more appropriate these days as it has proper-not-pansy-ass vampires in it. And Salma Hayek. The trailer does it no justice, but it’s below anyway.

They surround us.

You all know them. They pour out of cars, subways, buses and trams infiltrating all aspects of our lives. Can’t even spit these days without hitting one. Yes. Vampires. And them pooches hanging about. Nothing seems to stop them. Staking someone with “O.M.E.” screaming from their shirt seems to be frowned upon too. Not to mention the hassle it would bring from the press who’d be screaming bloody murder. This new breed seems to be immune to sunlight as well. Where have the good old Blade-days gone when vampires were respectable and partied in an underground lair with blood showers coming out of the sprinkler system? Poof. Scattered into the wind like they were dusted by Buffy herself.

Speaking of spoofs… Luckily things can still be made fun of. The gang who brought us all of the gruesomely awful Epic-Disaster-I-Still-Know-What-You-Did-Last-17-Times movie parodies might have struck gold for once. It’s another parody, but this time it may be just what we need. Check out how Twilight is ripped apart in the Vampires Suck trailer below. Take your girlfriends/wives/friends and spread the joy! Of the film obviously, nothing else. Obviously.

As an added bonus, of which Tony already wrote about, there’s always Team BJ for all the guys all around the world.

No, and I’m truly sorry about this, but it’s not me this time. Never fear, I’m sure that’ll happen at some point too.

As a consolation prize you can go to CODEFROMTHE70S.ORG and download Desktop Earth, a wallpaper for Windows. Unlike normal image based wallpapers, this neat little program updates itself regularly and shows you what the Earth would look like from space at that precise moment. Play with different timezones and cloud coverage to vary the overall look and vantage point.

And it looks simply amazing.
