Railcar Fine Goods – Ultra Rare Vintage Union Special
by Taavi Kuisma on Jan.15, 2012, under Fashion and style, Headlines
Railcar Fine Goods is all about hand made denim produced using only vintage tools. Like an ultra rare vintage Union Special 1 needle chain stitch machine. According to Railcar, “The machine is so old, it doesn’t have any internal oiling system and has to be oiled manually every time used.” Maintaining such old tools can be challenging. If something goes wrong it takes bit more than making a quick call for a spare part. Finding the right parts and taking time to fix the damaged tool can take time and will also have an effect on the production process. But that’s just part of the meticulous production process that ensures a high quality, hand made pair of jeans. No shortcuts, no easy way out. All done manually. Below few images from the Railcar Workshop. The images and below video shor how the selvedge edge seam is sewn on the Railcar Fine Goods selvedge style jeans. “Railcar jeans first gets sewn then pressed open to reveal the selvedge edge line when the bottoms are cuffed.” (Railcar)
Vintage Watches
by Taavi Kuisma on Dec.22, 2011, under Accessories & Luggage, Headlines
As hinted in my previous Wear and Tear update, I recently got my hands on a new time piece. A vintage time piece for that matter. This particular Omega wrist watch actually belonged to my grandfather, whom passed away earlier this year. The watch dates back to 1975. The nearly flawless watch did suffer a minor accident years ago as a result the glass had to be changed. Lucky the jeweler was able to source the same piece. What’s special about the watch is that it’s actually winding watch, that is it runs on clock work and does not have a battery. I just wind the watch every morning. Really great and accurate watch.
Vintage Leather Jacket

We’re into vintage goods, no surprises there. It just feel like they did things better back in the day. Naturally some companies are still sticking to the old ways, using vintage tools and high quality materials, prioritizing the quality of the goods instead of the style, price and even availability. The artisans of the old ways have my support.
Stuff to wear: My duffel bag
by Taavi Kuisma on Jan.25, 2010, under Headlines
Hi Y’all,
I’m continuing on something remy kicked off some time back. Our new weekly edition for the new year “Stuff to wear…” This week I’ introducing to you something special, a duffel bag. But not just any duffel bag, a Finnish vintage duffel bag. Genuine leather travel gear from few decades back. The bag is indeed made in Finland few decades back (I think it was made in the 70′s) but is still in what I would call prime condition.
Vintage 0901 Week XXXIII – Along came winter
by Taavi Kuisma on Dec.14, 2009, under Headlines
Hi Y’all,
We’ve all recovered from the Saturday’s party and as I hinted on my previous post, the winter indeed made a comeback. Great! Christmas without snow in Finland does not really feel like Christmas, or so they say. Nevertheless I’m really happy to see snow again. The thing is that along with the snow, came the freezing cold weather. This morning Helsinki woke up to -12 degrees Celsius. Cold… Well that’s not all that cold if you think about the fact that not that long ago we still had (and the North of Finland still has) -20 to -30 degree Celsius climates. Now that’s cold.
Vintage 0901 – Week XXX – Life’s Funny
by Taavi Kuisma on Nov.20, 2009, under Headlines
Hi Y’all,
What’s good at your neck of the woods? Hope it’s all good. For me, today was a good day. An eye opening day of sorts, full of ups and downs of the everyday life, but mostly sudden spurs of inspiration and realization. I mean things happen just so out of sudden and sometimes you can just have a laugh at things as it feels as there’s a certain flow to how your life moves ahead with all the twists and turns.

Part III: Sewing…
by Taavi Kuisma on Apr.05, 2009, under Headlines
I’ve had few posts about the Vintage elements of the jeans so will still continue on that…
In addition to the shuttle looms and natural indigo dye, another important aspect in the production of Vintage denim is the sewing.
Part II: Selvedge and Shuttle Looms

Term vintage is often thrown around when talking about jeans or other apparel for that matter. However, what really makes the garment vintage? Is it the style, the materials or the brand name? Vintage can refer to an item of a certain period of time, or an item possessing qualities that belong into a particular era.
